Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil - 30 day test.

It was Claire who originally told me about this oil. I have a very greasy t-zone and it drives me up the wall having to blot every couple of hours. I decided to buy this on pay day and to keep a diary on how it works. The lady on the counter was telling me the best thing to do it use a couple of drops neat for the first 3 weeks every night and then I can start using this mixed in with my moisturiser. She explained that the idea behind the oil is to trick the skin into thinking it had already produced enough oil so less oil would be produced. Skeptical at first but I have heard so many good reviews about this product I caved and decided to take it home with me.

The oil boasts a hefty price tag at £30 for 50ml but I'm assuming as you only need a few drops of the stuff that it should last a relatively long time. The dropper in the bottle helps to control the amount of oil that you use.

I wanted to test this for 30 days before writing a review because I wanted to make sure I didn't react to this product and to make damn sure that this was worth the money.

The results:

Day 1 - Still a little skeptical I use this as instructed before bed. I initially used 3 drops for my entire face but I got a bit greedy and used about 4 drops more. I look like a greasy mess and quickly realise I've put too much on. Oh well.

Day 5 - I can see a difference in the amount of oil my t-zone is producing. Its nothing drastic but I notice I don't need to touch up as much. The oil is very lightweight and doesn't feel heavy or pore clogging.

Day 10 - I'm making sure I use 3-4 drops for my entire face so I don't waste product. I've been out the night before and I notice that my skin doesn't look as dehydrated as it usually does. My t-zone isn't as greasy as day 1. This morning I mixed a drop of the oil into my anti-shine moisturiser despite what the lady from the Clarins counter said. I noticed that it didn't effect how my anti-shine moisturiser worked and my skin is super smooth ready for make up.

Day 15 - Still going strong! I'm really missing my moisturiser at the moment.

Day 20 - I missed a few days when I went camping but I can still see the results so all is not lost. I've been mixing 1 - 2 drops into my morning moisturiser as standard now and still using it neat on a night time. I'm going to start mixing 1 - 2 drops into my night cream and start using moisturiser at night again as I am still really missing it. I've noticed that my make up is staying on for a lot longer than it usually does.

Day 25 - I'm now using my moisturiser and the oil at night. I'm still loving this stuff. I've noticed I'm going through this stuff pretty quickly so I'm making sure to only use a couple of drops as I've only got half a bottle left! Eeek!

Day 30 - The Conclusion - Today is the last day of the test and I'm really happy with the results. My skin is less oily and is more even in tone. It isn't a out of this world miracle product where my skin has completely changed and no longer produces oil, oil is still being produced but just less than usual. My skin has kept hydrated and my make up is staying on a lot longer before I need to touch up with powder. I'm really happy with the results.

Since doing this test I have been using this oil for over a month now and I've found it works wonders on hangover skin. When I get in from a night out I've been taking off my make up with a micellar water and using this neat on my skin before bed. I've been waking up with a bad head still but my skin looks glowy and hydrated!

Have you tried this oil? What did you think?

A guide to surviving a hangover.

Here at Trebles and a Mixer, we're fond of partying. Sometimes we party a little bit too hard and can need a little help to get us feeling back to our normal selves. So if like us you've been hammering the tequila shots too much or maybe you've just been working hard and burning the candle at both ends; here's a guide to feeling a bit crap.
Firstly I know everyone says this, but drink as much water as you can before you go to bed and continue to get as much of the wet stuff down you as you can when you wake up. As much as it's the last thing you want to do, try and eat something. I'm a big fan of a bacon sandwich when hungover, the combination of protein and carbs seems to sort me out a treat (veggies- try an egg and hash brown sandwich instead).

Next, get yourself in the bath. This will probably make you feel worse to begin with, but it will make you feel a million times better in the long run. If you're anything like me, you've just woke up with your hair resembling a birds nest, panda eyes and the club stamp has transferred from your hand to your forehead during your slumber; you need a bath! Drinking alcohol severely dries out my hair and skin, so I use the following products to start feeling human again.

197

No 7 Beautiful Skin Hot Cloth Cleanser
I love Liz Earle, but I find this cleanser a lot more moisturising in my hungover time of need. It gets rid of any traces of make up, even waterproof mascara. I always stock up on this when the £5 No 7 vouchers are going round.
Dove Purely Pampering Body Wash- Shea butter with warm vanilla
I recently picked this up and I'm really impressed. It makes my skin feel so soft and moisturised, that sometimes I forget to follow up with body lotion.

John Frieda Full Repair Deep Conditioner
I don't treat my hair very well on a night out. There's the heavy styling before I leave the house and then copious amounts of backcombing and hairspray throughout of the night. This stuff is great at transforming my locks from straw back to hair.

If you don't have to leave the house feeling this rough (lucky you!), you might want to spend the day giving your skin and rest and go without make up. I, on the other hand, like to put a little bit of make up on. It makes me feel less of a gross tramp that I am in reality. Here's my current skincare and make up favourites for those rough times....

199

Clarins HydraQuench Cream
No surprise that I would include a Clarins product here, is there? But, this is an absolute god send, it moisturises my skin beautifully. It sinks in straight away, leaving no greasy feeling. I do however think it smells like oven cleaner, but I can get over that.
Clarins Beauty Flash Balm
I can never decide if I entirely love Beauty Flash Balm or not. I think it's because there is so much hype around it I was expecting actual miracles. Having said this, I use this every time I'm feeling a bit rough. It calms my redness and makes my face feel less puffy, creating a nice dewy base for your foundation.

Avon Calming Effects Foundation- Ivory
I recently ordered a number of sample sized tubes of foundations from Avon, this was one of my favourites. I would say it's a light to medium coverage (but buildable) with a dewy finish, ideal of perking up tired looking skin. I always stay away from foundations which are matte when I'm looking less than great, they just end up making me look more tired. I'm still on the hunt for a good BB cream for these hangover moments, if anyone has any suggestions? (Bryden recommends the Ginvera Green Tea BB)

Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer- Fair
Excellent at covering up eye bags and any blemishes that I have as a result of knocking back too many tequila shots the night before.

202

Topshop Blush- Neon Rose, Flush and Head Over Heels are all favourites
These cream blushers are excellent at adding a bit of colour back into my pale face.
Revlon ColourStay Finishing Powder
I use this shimmery powder as a brightening eyeshadow and to highlight my face. It helps me look a bit more alive when I'm actually dying on the inside.

No 7 Lash Adapt Mascara
This is buildable without clumping, allowing you to put as much on as you need to look bright eyed once again.

Rimmel Eyebrow Pencil- Dark brown
I look horrific without my brows on. That is all I have to say.

Korres Lip Butter- Pomegranate
This adds a subtle hint of colour and is really moisturising.

Now that I don't look like I've been dragged out of the gutter; I always try to put some clothes on, sitting round in my PJs all day makes me feel worse at times. I usually stick a loose fitting dress on or team a baggy top with leggings. Comfy socks are a must!

203

If I'm lucky enough to have a day off work I will now adopt the following routine- FOOD, FILM, NAP (repeat until necessary). These are my top choices for your hangover viewing pleasure-

Clueless-movie-01
Clueless
A classic. If you don't like this film, we can never be friends!

1731-me-without-you
Me without you
Nice easy viewing; but if you're feeling a bit over emotional in your hungover state, you might shed a few tears. I really enjoy some of the outfits in this too (maybe a future 'Screen Style' post?).

8579833_gal
Where the heart is
This is pure cheese. Natalie Portman plays a white trash girl that gets left by her deadbeat boyfriend at a Walmart and ends up living there! My friend Kaite and I watch this religiously when we're feeling rough, I have seen it so many times!

So there you go, my guide to getting over feeling crappy. If this doesn't work for you, remember....

Resolve is your best friend.

Bag it up.

It's a bit of a blogger cliche to do a 'What's in my bag?' post, I know. Maybe I just wanted to show off my new handbag (or maybe I just wanted to use a Geri Halliwell song as a blog title), anyway here's all the crap I carry around on a daily basis...

Skin Care Diary 2.

As you may have read in the first part of my Skin Care Diary, I went to see the dermatologist just over a week ago about starting the isotretioin treatment Roaccutane for my long standing acne problem. Luckily all my tests came back fine (including the pregnancy one!) and I was given my first months prescription to start very soon. I'm really excited to start the treatment, but not for the side effects! I spent an absolute fortune in Boots buying skin care items in preparation. The skin care lady thought I was insane when I told her I was planning on having extremely dry skin in the future!

In the mean time I thought I'd share with you a few techniques and recommendations for covering acne with make up. I stumbled across this video my the amazing Lisa Eldridge on You Tube in which she uses a very similar technique to the one I use for covering up my acne. This way you get to look at a pretty model instead of my ugly mug.

I always start off by preparing my skin before foundation as my skin currently tends to be a bit greasy and shiny during the day. I love Good Things Miracle Mattifier to moisturise with, followed by Murad Oil-Control Mattifier over my T-Zone for extra help and then finally a thin layer of Clarins Beauty Flash Balm all over my face.

Photobucket

Like Lisa I use a lighter foundation over the majority of my face, Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation (shade- 51) in my case. I love this foundation. I'd used MAC for years but had found recently my usual shade was looking a bit orangey and I ended picking up this Bourjois foundation on special in Boots. It's light, easy to blend and even smells nice. I then use the same Vichy/Dermablend corrective foundation Lisa uses in the video (shade- 15 Opal) over the worse areas on my face. For me this tends to be around my chin and jaw line, I also apply some of this over my permanently red nose! For any areas still looking a bit red and for my under eye shadows I use Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer (shade- 1 Fair), which is another amazing cheap buy. I then usually set my make up with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural (Shade- Light), but I'm really interested in trying the setting powder Lisa talks about in the video.

Does anyone else suffering from acne have any tips or product recommendations to help cover up bad skin?

Some like it hot.

Long time no blog, sadly work has been preoccupying our time (maybe a bit of partying too!). Both Bryden and I have a million planned blog posts to do but so little time to fit them in. Please bare with us!

This weekend was pay day for me, so today I popped down to Royal Quays Shopping Outlet with my Mam. I find Royal Quays to be a hit and miss, they don't have as good a selection of shops as they used to. However I happened to be looking around Pilot (Where I don't think I've bought anything from  in about 10 years!) and I happened to spot these shoes. Months ago I'd seen a similar style shoe in New Look, but never got round to buying them. Months later I was typing 'wedge desert boots' into Ebay every few days in the hope of snagging the shoes that got away. I finally tracked down a tan brown pair just last week and they have barely left my feet since. I was so surprised to find an identical pair in black in the middle of a rack full of diamante flip flops and tacky platforms. They were only £20, so I now have two colour options for about £5 more than the original New Look pair.

Photobucket

I picked this peace sign necklace in the Claire's Accessories outlet for £4, I was impressed with the standard of some of the jewellery in there. They've got some nice things amongst the other tacky crap! I also bought a new purse as the knock off Anna Sui purse I bought in the Sydney Market in Australia last year is on it's last legs. Tan tooled leather of course.

Finally I bought this book about one of my favourite films- Some Like It Hot for £4.99 from a discount book shop. If you haven't seen this film, you have to watch it! I'm not a huge Marilyn Monroe fan, but I think she plays her character perfectly in this film.

I've also got a couple of tip offs for some free gifts that are available (only in the UK) at the moment. As you probably already know Glamour magazine are currently having their annual Benefit giveaway. There's three different gifts to choose from and at only £2 a magazine there's no reason not to snap up a few! You can choose from High Beam, Posie Tint or Benetint (which I didn't get as I've had it in the past and I'm not a huge fan). I love PosieTint, such a pretty pink.

Photobucket

I visited the Clarins counter again this month (more on what I actually bought in the next installment of my skin care diary) and saw that if you bought two products (one to be skin care) you get to pick three travel sized products from a selection of ten. These are decent sized products and I found I'm still using the tiny sample sized products I was given last month, so these are going to last me ages.

Photobucket

I went for the Multi-Active Day Cream (which will apparently correct my early wrinkles!), HydraQuench Cream (I love this already) and the cult Beauty Flash Balm (ideal for hangover days!). I'm not totally sure how long this offer runs for and no doubt Glamour magazine will sell out, so get in fast!

There's under two weeks to go before the North East Blogger Meet Up, which is taking place on the 25th of June in Newcastle, more information can be found in this post. If you would like to come please let us or Carla know, we don't want anyone to get left behind or lost! You can email me and Bryden at treblesandamixer@hotmail.co.uk, tweet us or fill in this form. Anyone is welcome to come along, we can't wait to see all of your lovely faces!

Skin Care Diary 1.

I wanted to do a post about my current skin care routine which has probably worked the best for me out of anything I have used in a long time. My skin is, in a word, rubbish. Ever since my early teens I've had trouble with spots and in more recent years, fully blown acne. In the past year I've suffered from cystic acne which leaves me with huge scars, usually around my jaw line. No fun at all.

I know my acne isn't as bad as some poor people get it; but still at 25 years old, it's frustrating to suffer from bad skin. I have tried pretty much every antibiotic, wash, cream, lotion available. None of which have fully cleared my skin.

A couple of months ago I visited the doctor about something else and happened to mention my skin (for about the millionth time!) and FINALLY they suggested I go and see a dermatologist. I had my first appointment a couple of weeks ago and it's been suggested that I try an Isotretinoin treatment, which is basically an extremely concentrated form of Vitamin A for four months. This isn't something I've decided without a lot of thought and research before hand. Isotretinoin is known for a vast range of side effects and I'll have to go to the hospital once a month for blood and pregnancy tests (It is extremely harmful to pregnant women). I'm thinking of doing updates every now and again to monitor my progress and hopefully help anyone else considering the treatment. Sounds pretty savage huh?!

Anyway enough of the serious stuff, lets look at some lovely skincare products...

Bryden and I were in Boots a few weeks ago and were given some samples from the Clarins counter from their new Daily Energizers range, which in their words is 'A range of gentle yet super effective plant-based skin care products exclusively for 18 to late 20's skin'. After using the samples for a few days, I could already see the difference to my skin. My skin was a lot more balanced and redness had been reduced.

I decided to purchase the starter kit which, for £19.50, contained a full size Daily Energizer Cream and sample sizes of the Cleansing Gel and Wake Up Booster. I also bought the Clarins Gentle Exfoliator as Boots had an offer on where you got Advantage card points worth £10 when you bought two items. The sales assistant also very kindly gave me some samples of the Daily Energizer Cream-Gel (To use on my skin now while it's still oily, I'll use the normal Daily Energizer Cream when my skin starts to get drier from the Isotretinoin treatment) and some eye balm and gel.

Photobucket
Photobucket

I've never used any products from Clarins before and I'm really impressed. My skin can be quite sensitive and react badly to a lot of products, but nothing but good things has come from using this!

Photobucket

In addition to my new Clarins regime I've been using Murad Blemish Target Formula on any spots that have sprung up (I got this in a blemish kit from ASOS, but my skin reacted badly to the rest of the products in the kit. Hello puffy red tomato face!) and the Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 to control my grease fest face during the day.

The ironic thing about starting the Isotretinoin treatment is that my skin is the best it's been in ages, in fact the dermatologist didn't even believe I had acne until I removed my make up! But, due to the scars I've ended up with in the past I don't want to run the risk of another cystic acne break out.

I know this has been a very long winded post, but I'd love to hear from anyone else that has either suffered/is suffering from cystic acne, has had the Isotretinoin treatment or has any other tips or advice. The main side effects of the Isotretinoin are extreme dryness of the skin, hair and eyes, so if anyone knows of any products that will help with this I would be extremely grateful!
